Update: Microsoft said it resolved the issue as of 10:30 p.m. Pacific Tuesday.
Microsoft is citing a “recent networking update” for an outage that took down services including Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online, Sharepoint Online, Yammer, and Skype for Business in parts of the U.S., Australia and Asia for more than two hours on Tuesday evening.
“We’ve identified that a recent networking update may have caused user traffic coming from the internet to fail intermittently before reaching Microsoft 365 services,” the company said in a status report around 7 p.m. Pacific time. “We’ve reverted this update and are seeing some initial signs of mitigation. We’re continuing to validate the cause of the problem while we monitor the environment for service recovery.

“We are working to address an intermittent issue currently impacting our services,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement.
Earlier on Tuesday, Microsoft said its Teams workplace collaboration tool has surpassed 20 million daily active users, up 50 percent spike over the past four months. That puts the tool well ahead of its chief rival Slack, which said it had more than 12 million daily users as of last month. Slack’s stock closed down more than 8 percent on the day.
Slack questioned the significance of Microsoft’s lead, saying that it “continues to see unmatched engagement on our platform with 5+ billion weekly actions, including 1+ billion mobile actions.” Microsoft Teams is available as part of the company’s Office 365 suite, giving it a distribution advantage.
